In France, CNRS has invited IODP/ECORD to present its activities in the European City of Science

For the first year, the European City of Science have been held in "Le Grand Palais" in Paris from 14th to 16th november 2008. The IODP/ECORD program have been selected by CNRS, as one of the main european scientific project, to introduce the visitors to the fascinating univers of scientific ocean drilling.

A group of IODP/ECORD scientists, from all parts of France, went there to make the people understand why coring the ocean floor was such an exhalting scientific experience and how useful it is to understand our planet system. There have been 42000 visitors that could discover the ocean drilling by looking at Chikyu animated films, playing with tectonic plates puzzle, observing thin section under microscope with polarized light and discovering the borehole geophysic with a probe demonstration.

Borehole geophysics for kids ?

Montpellier EPC team had set a borehole geophysic probe: the Optical Borehole Imaging Tool (OBI).

The tool was set inside a cristal tube (plexiglass) and the children or attendants could see through the probe working. For a better understanding, the chidren were able to put their hand around the tube while the probe was working. After operation, they were very surprised to discover the image of their hands recorded by the probe on the computer (see picture beside). Associated with diaporama and posters, the crowd could better understand the means and purpose of borehole geophysics.
