Subduction zones : overriding plate deformation

I am co-supervising the PhD student Manar Alsaif with Frédéric Gueydan. This PhD project is part of the SUBITOP European training network.

Manar is working on upper-plate deformation in response to deep slab dynamics, with field applications in the Aegean region.

Subduction zones : slab deformation in upper mantle

I started to investigate during my post-doc at Imperial College London and at Cardiff University, with Rhodri Davies, Saskia Goes and Huw Davies the dynamics of free subduction into the Earth’s mantle.

Tectonic plates deform when they encounter a penetration barrier at 660 km depth between upper and lower mantle (viscosity increase, endothermic phase transition...), which impacts the surface motion of the plates.

Predicting seismic anisotropy under oceanic plates

Collaboration with Navid Hedjazian, Edouard Kaminski and Rhodri Davies.

We calculate the steady-state flow of asthenosphere below rigid lithospheric oceanic plates moving away from a ridge. The velocity gradients are then used to compute the development of a lattice-preferred orientation (LPO) for olivine minerals using the D-Rex model, and finally to predict seismic anisotropy.

Numerical modelling code

I am using the finite-element code Fluidity, developed by Rhodri Davies, Stephan Kramer, Cian Wilson and the AMCG at Imperial College London.
